The Motette recording label celebrates its 25th anniversary with the release of a limited-edition, unique documentation of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll ranging from his beginnings and first achievements as an organ builder to his uncontested mastery and immortal renown. In digital recordings of 34 organs on six CDs, 12 organists play music composed by contemporaries of Cavaillé-Coll and by 20th-century composers. A 200-page booklet is filled with information about Cavaillé-Coll’s life, his goals and the uncompromising path he took to achieve his concept of the organ as the optimal musical instrument. To their everlasting credit, the owners of the Motette firm produced a landmark set of LP phonograph records in 1987 devoted to a wide-ranging survey of Cavaill/é-Coll organs. This new production brings that famous set to CDs with many additions and some newer recordings to represent several of the organs. The wonderful booklet, alone, is worth the price of admission!
