Re-issuing famous recordings made by Philips, this CD indeed captures the legendary facility at improvisation which was Cochereau’s. Beginning with a four movement symphony, the recording continues with thirteen improvisations on Vespers verses proving not only mastery of varied forms, but also the colors of the organ of Notre-Dame as it was in 1964. A bolero improvised with percussion in 1973 and based on a theme of Charles Racquet who was organist of Notre-Dame from 1618-1664 is also included. Improvised and recorded in a single take, the piece is a magnificent chromatic arc of sound. A transcription of the Boléro by son Jean-Marc Cochereau is available. [EC-116] Symphonie en Improvisation Treize Improvisations sur des Versets de Vêpres Boléro Improvisé sur un theme de Charles Racquet
