On two separate discs, Adrian Partington performs the complete organ works of Englishman Basil Harwood (1859-1949). Hear works of the man who served as Music Editor of the Oxford Hymn Book and as organist of Christ Church, Oxford.
Upon his 1909 resignation from Christ Church, The Times Newspaper said of Mr. Harwood:
"...He is a composer whose fame becomes wider each year, a musician who through seventeen years has very largely contributed by encouragement of others and by his own merits to the raising of Oxford to the high position she now holds as a music centre.
Everyone who knows his music, who knows that he has never written a note that did not mean something, who knows how much he can make music mean, will hope that he is only laying aside his duties to devote himself to further composition.
Fickle fate will decide whether his works are enough to win him immortality." (As quoted in the CD booklet).
