Elgar & the Three Cathedral Organists by Relf Clark In four essays, Relf Clark describes the creative and friendly relationships that Edward Elgar enjoyed with the organists of three English Cathedrals: Ivor Atkins at Worcester, Herbert Brewer at Gloucester, and G. R. Sinclair at Hereford. These three were in their respective organ lofts for two decades during which Elgar’s creative powers were remarkably fertile, yielding his greatest works. These organists also led the illustrious, biennial, Three Choirs Festival in which Elgar’s music was, and still is, often heard. Elgar, an organist himself as well as a composer and violinist, took a great interest in the Hope-Jones organ at Worcester. Clark offers a fascinating explanation and solution to Enigma Variation XI which is dedicated to Sinclair. 78 pages, illustrated, softbound.
