Central Indiana, perhaps best known for its cornfields, automobile races, basketball prowess, and the warm hospitality and friendliness of its people, has a rich and varied history. Organ building flourished in Indiana as it developed, and the 2007 OHS National Convention (the Society’s first visit to this part of the country) demonstrated that the area is home to fascinating organs of great historical and artistic value. Enjoy this “Hoosier Holiday” with 31 pipe organs, built from 1851 to 2004, all heard in thrilling live performances featuring a wide variety of Baroque, Romantic, and contemporary music. The 4-CD set also includes several selections of enthusiastic hymn-singing, always a highlight of OHS Conventions, plus a deluxe 40-page booklet with photos, stoplists, and historical information. In programming for the convention, special effort was made to recognize organ builders and composers who spent at least part of their careers in Indiana. Several recitalists honored Indiana composers by performing their music, and many examples are included in this collection. Note particularly the following:
1) William Albright, native of Gary
2) H. Leroy Baumgartner, a native of Rochester and graduate of the Indianapolis Conservatory of Music, who lived for a time in Elkhart and Indianapolis
3) William Horatio Clarke, organbuilder of Indianapolis, who served as organist of Roberts Park Methodist Episcopal Church
4) Joseph Clokey, a native of New Albany
5) Cole Porter, a native of Peru, where he is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery
6) Ned Rorem, a native of Richmond
7) Van Denman Thompson, long-time professor of music at DePauw University, and organist for Gobin Memorial Methodist Church, both in Greencastle
