Huge 19th Century Orchestral Organ

Joachim Walter plays written transcriptions of Hermann Jimmerthal (1809-1866), organist at the giant 1854 Schulze organ in St. Mary’s, Lübeck (where Buxtehude was organist in the 17th century), that demonstrate fascinating and unexpected, kaleidoscopic, registration practices continued by Jimmerthal’s successor, Karl Lichtwark. The formidible Berens works offer the contrast of composed organ pieces that require more conventional registration.

Since the 1854 organ at St. Mary's was destroyed during World War II, this CD is recorded on the 4m organ completed in 1871 with 83 stops, many orchestral and, by Friedrich Ladegast for the Cathedral in Schwerin, one of the world’s largest at the time it was built and very similar in its stoplist to the 1854 Schulze destroyed at St. Mary's. The Ladegast at Schwerin is now entirely restored. Very informative CD booklet.
