Compiled by D. DeWitt Wasson, this 3-volume compendium of more than 2,600 pages not only indexes 33,907 hymntunes but also lists every publication of each one, including compositions featuring the tune. The tunes are also coded to denominational hymnals, past and present, as well as metrically and melodically. The tune may appear in a “number” given to a particular collection that includes a piece on that hymntune, or it may be in “Other References,” giving composer, title, collection title, and publisher when it appears in a collection of organ pieces not based on hymntunes. Noted hymnodist Marilyn Kay Stulken presents a thoroughgoing description and very positive review in the October, 1999, issue of The American Organist. A must for the specialist and fascinating browsing for hymnodists at all levels.
