Fine German Romantic Sound! Though there was an organ in the Minster at Salem as early as 1250 and there has been a distinguished group of instruments built for this Cistercian Abbey over the centuries, the present organ was built behind the surviving Baroque case by Wilhelm Schwarz of neighboring Überlingen in 1900/1901. 38 stops on three manuals and pedal, it is a fine instrument for the German Romantic literature played by Andreas Jetter on this recording. Only 6 of the Abbey’s former peal of 16 bells remain in place at Salem. When first heard in 1758, the 16-bell peal was the largest of its time. Six other bells were moved after the tower built for them failed in 1807 and have been located, but four are now lost. PIUTTI: Prelude & Fugue in D “Pfingstfeier” Op. 16 STANFORD: Chorale Prelude on Jesu dulcis memoria KARG-ELERT: Two Chorale Preludes, Op. 65 Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König No. 58 Nun danket alle Gott No. 59 LINDBERG: Gammal Fäbodpsalm från Dalarna NOWOWIEJSKI: Symphony No. 3 in e, Op. 45 The Minster Bells are heard with the charming and able assistance of the local avians.
