| This German Requiem was written in 1636 for the funeral of a prince from Schütz' home region and preplanned by the prince and the composer. The Seven Last Words dates from 1645 and the two other pieces performed here are from a collection published in 1648, dedicated to the city fathers of Leipzig, and making a quiet statement regarding the contrapuntal skills learned by Schütz from his teacher Giovanni Gabrieli. | Wurlitzer pipe organs are numbered by their wiring diagrams rather than by opus number – a rather well-known secret among organ historians. Thus, we know that the Wurlitzer pipe organ No. 2035 was built for Paramount Pictures and it was installed on one of their Hollywood sound stages in 1929. In 1942, it was moved to the NBC radio studios in San Francisco where it was used regularly until 1953, when its space was need for TV equipment. Muzak executive Richard Simonton bought it and installed it in his home and enlarged it from 19 to 36 ranks on four manuals. Gaylord Carter records a great program of film themes.
