Organist Ludger Lohmann plays works of Robert Schumann on one of the largest surviving E. F. Walcker organs in Germany, at the Catholic Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Neuhausen auf den Fildern, near Stuttgart. These works of Schumann (who did not play the organ) can be played on organ or pedal piano, and it is clear that the first two sets were specifically intended for the pedal piano. In order to achieve the dynamic nuances Schubert's music requires, (which would be less involved on a piano) the organist must adjust the registration, as this organ (and organs available in Schubert's day) is not equipped with a swell box. With the myriad of colorful stops available, this 1854 Walcker instrument is an appropriate choice, as organist Lohmann ably demonstrates.
