Transcriptions of Favorites Excellent playing and obvious enthusiasm for operatic literature mark this enjoyable recording of overtures by Rossini. In the nineteenth century, though not to the liking of ecclesiastical authorities, these pieces and many like them were played in church and even published in hundreds of collections intended for church use. The laity did not object. Maintaining the tradition, the use of the 1821 Fratelli Serassi organ, Op. 384 in the parish church of Santa Maria Assunto, Caluso is certainly appropriate. Particularly notable is the variety of color made possible by having two players at the same organ. Giuliana Maccaroni and Federica Iannella show fine ensemble skills and use the Serassi organ to its fullest. There is a complete commentary on the stoplist and features of the organ that is well worth the effort of translation from Italian.
