The 1755 Silbermann organ of the Catholic Cathedral of Dresden survives with destroyed mechanism reconstructed and supporting pipework carefully stored in 1944 to avoid bombings. Playing pipes once played by Mozart, Martin Schmeding interprets the Goldberg Variations with sensitivity to the differences between the harpsichord and the organ. Extensive notes on the registrations used, the history of the organ and analysis of the composition itself are found in the CD booklet. Hybrid Multichannel SACD plays on all SACD and CD players.
